About
Mission Statement
The goal of AboutChineseDance.org is to introduce Concert Chinese Dance to a general audience. Through explanations of individual dances, as well as broader styles and important themes to the development of the genre, our group of writers aims to promote awareness and knowledge about concert Concert Chinese Dance
Dance can transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. It is with this belief that we offer an introduction to the cultural and historical background of Concert Chinese Dance. Besides explaining a dance's techniques and performance qualities, we also introduce essential elements of Chinese history and culture to better understand each pieces' artistry.
We recognize that our posts may not fully reflect the depth and research of existing Chinese Dance scholarship. As lovers and practitioners of Chinese Dance, our goal is to provide a comprehensive introduction to Chinese Dance, generate more interest in this art form, and provide unique perspectives into how Classical Chinese Dance has been adapted by diasporic communities.
The deepest gratitude goes to Professor Wilcox of William & Mary, and Xuejuan Feng of Xuejuan Dance Ensemble, who generously gave their time and energies to help establish content guidelines and recommend Chinese scholarship on the topic. Seed funding for this project was generously provided by Princeton's Lewis Center of the Arts, Peter B. Lewis Fund.
